Introducing Text Tools

Text Tools is a new page in keybr. It provides a simple function to get some numbers about an arbitrary piece of text. Just paste any text fragment into the text field and observe some interesting statistics, like the number of characters and words, what are the most common words, etc.

The most interesting in our opinion are the time to type and the time to read.

For example pasting the entire "The Lord of the Rings" gives us these numbers:

  • Characters with whitespace: 2 514 046
  • Characters excluding whitespace: 2 038 418
  • All words: 475 016
  • Unique words: 14 364
  • Average word length: 4.1
  • Top 15 most common words:
    • the: 29 111
    • and: 19 924
    • of: 12 999
    • to: 9 933
    • a: 9 173
    • he: 7 953
    • in: 7 245
    • it: 6 365
    • i: 6 142
    • that: 6 039
    • was: 5 654
    • you: 4 855
    • they: 4 813
    • but: 4 629
    • his: 4 429
  • At average typing speed of 40WPM it would take 209 hours 30 minutes and 13 seconds to type this text.
  • At average reading speed of 300WPM it would take 27 hours 56 minutes and one second to read this text.

Obviously it takes much more work to create something as monumental as The Lord of the Rings, but it is instructive to know that it would take ~210 hours for an average person just to type it out.
